Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

CGS was developed by two Catholic laywomen in Rome guided by the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori. The resulting hands-on religious formation materials are based on the Bible, Catholic Liturgy and Sacraments, Tradition, and Church teachings. CGS sessions for infants and toddlers are held in the Holy Family Nido and Atrium at St. Vincent Ferrer. CGS sessions for Levels I, II, and III are held in the Guardian Angels and St. Dominic Atria, dedicated sacred spaces located in the St. Catherine of Siena Priory. These prepared environments are intended to help children fully engage in their religious education, to develop their religious potential, and to facilitate their participation in the life of the Church. If you’d like more information about CGS, please visit cgsusa.org. If you’d like to visit either of our atria and see a demonstration presentation of CGS materials, please contact Lisa Harrelson, Director of Religious Education, at lharrelson@svsc.info. All are welcome!

Most children begin preparing for First Confession and First Holy Communion in 1st grade and receive these sacraments in the spring of their 2nd grade year. Preparation occurs within CGS Level II. Children must participate in religious formation for at least two consecutive years leading up to these sacraments.
