For the 2020-2021 school year, St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Catherine of Siena Parish is pleased to offer both in-person and remote learning options at all levels. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) Levels 1, 2, and 3 is for children from 3-years-old to 6th grade. Level 1 serves children from 3-years-old – Kindergarten. Level 2 serves 1st – 2nd  grades. Level 3 serves 3rd – 6th grades. We’ll also offer the Ignite Middle School Youth Ministry program for 7th and 8th grades. Sessions will begin on Monday, October 5, 2020 and run through the middle of June. The fee for Religious Education at any level is $275 per child. In-person CGS and Ignite will be held at St. Catherine of Siena. In-person Ignite will also be held at St. Vincent Ferrer on Tuesdays. Please read beyond the COVID-19 Modifications for more information on each program and for scheduling options.

COVID-19 Modifications

Our in-person sessions will be adapted to meet Archdiocesan safety protocols. The following modifications will be in effect for the upcoming year, but may be revised at any time as the situation develops:

  • The first day of sessions will be Monday, October 5, 2020 to allow some extra time for your children to adjust to their new school situations.
  • In-person sessions will be limited to 5 children per session at St. Catherine of Siena and 3 children per session at St. Vincent Ferrer to maintain social distancing.
  • In-person sessions have been shortened to one hour each to allow for more options since we must limit the number of children per session.
  • There will be a break between sessions to allow for cleaning and for all children to leave before the next group arrives for screening. It will be imperative that children arrive and depart on time.
  • The Atrium or classroom will be cleaned and disinfected before and after each session.
  • We will have an air purifier running in the Atrium since there are no windows in that space. Our facilities at St. Vincent Ferrer have windows.
  • Parents and caregivers will drop off and pick up children at St. Catherine’s from the rear of the church where they can social distance, instead of from the vestibule outside the Atrium.
  • We will check each catechist’s and each child’s temperature using a touchless thermometer before they enter the Atrium or classroom. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4° F or above will not be permitted to enter.
  • Parents, caregivers, and middle school children who arrive unaccompanied must satisfactorily answer four health-screening questions before the children will be permitted to enter.
  • Adults and children will wear masks during in-person sessions.
  • Adults and children will use hand sanitizer before entering the Atrium or classroom.
  • We will provide a plastic safety shield for each child’s work area in the Atrium.
  • There will be no eating in the Atrium or classroom. Please ensure your child has a snack before coming to religious education.
  • If a child begins to exhibit symptoms of illness during a session, we will call a parent or caregiver to pick them up.
  • In case of any known exposure to COVID-19, sessions will be conducted via Zoom at the regular class time until it is safe to resume in-person meetings.
  • All sessions will be held over Zoom for the first two sessions after the Christmas Break to allow catechists and children to quarantine following any holiday travel.
  • Any children who normally attend an in-person session and travel at other times should join their appropriate Zoom session, rather than attending in person, for two weeks upon their return to NYC.

If New York City returns to stay-at-home orders at any point during the academic year, all sessions will be held via Zoom at their regularly scheduled day and time.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

CGS was developed by two Catholic laywomen in Rome guided by the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori. The resulting religious education materials are based on the Bible, Catholic Liturgy and Sacraments, Tradition, and Church teachings. CGS sessions are held in the Atrium, a sacred space designated for catechetical sessions intended to help children fully engage in their religious education, to develop their religious potential, and to facilitate their participation in the life of the Church. Preparation for First Confession and First Holy Communion occurs within Level 2. If you’d like more information about CGS, please visit cgsusa.org. If you’d like to visit the Atrium and see a demonstration presentation of CGS materials, please contact Lisa Harrelson at lharrelson@svsc.info. All are welcome!

Most children prepare for First Confession and First Holy Communion beginning in 1st grade. Children must participate in religious formation for at least two years leading up to these sacraments.

Ignite Middle School Youth

Our Ignite Middle School Youth Ministry program serves as continuing religious education, as well as formation for youth who have not yet been confirmed. We cover the Old Testament, the New Testament and Life of Jesus, the Human Person, the Sacraments, Morality, Prayer, Church History and other relevant topics.

Most children prepare for Confirmation in 7th and 8th grade and are confirmed in the fall of their 9th grade year. Children must participate in religious formation for at least two years leading up to Confirmation.
